A tragic incident occurred in the Agege area of Lagos on Saturday morning, where a police officer lost his life following an altercation with a group of irate commercial motorcyclists, commonly known as Okada riders.
The officer, along with his team, had responded to a distress call about an accident at the WEMCO junction, near Mobil Road, involving a truck and an Okada rider. The police were dispatched to the scene to evacuate the truck, which had reportedly knocked down the motorcyclist. However, upon arrival, the officers faced stiff opposition from a crowd of Okada riders who demanded that the truck be set ablaze.
The Lagos State Police Command spokesman, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the unfortunate incident, describing the attack on the police team as unprovoked. According to Hundeyin, the police received the distress call at around 1:40 AM on Saturday, reporting the accident between the Okada rider and the trailer.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the motorcyclist had run into the trailer, resulting in his death. Upon reaching the scene, the police were confronted by a large crowd of Okada riders who had gathered, and while attempting to evacuate the truck, the officers were attacked.
In the midst of the chaos, a 46-year-old Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) sustained severe head injuries and died on the spot. The truck driver managed to escape the scene. In response, five suspects have been arrested, and a manhunt is underway to apprehend the other culprits involved in the attack.
