Authorities in Anambra State have addressed concerns regarding the recent killings of seven northern youths in Awka, asserting that the incident was not motivated by ethnic or religious factors.
On Thursday, gunmen operating in the Ifite-Awka area reportedly shot and killed the youths after they attempted to apprehend the occupants of another vehicle in what was believed to be an abduction attempt. This violent act has raised fears of potential reprisal attacks, with many labeling it a targeted killing.
In response to the incident, a video circulating on social media depicted protests by some northern residents decrying the deaths of their community members.
Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga released a statement on October 25, 2024, addressing the unrest. He said, “The Anambra State Police Command is aware of the protest video regarding the tragic events at Ifite Awka on October 24, 2024, which resulted in the deaths of five individuals and left three others severely injured.”
Ikenga emphasized that preliminary investigations indicate that the armed assailants opened fire as they attempted to flee after police were alerted to their activities in the area. “We want to clarify that this incident was not directed at any ethnic or religious group,” he added.
He assured the public that the police command is focused on maintaining safety through enhanced operational patrols and surveillance to prevent similar incidents. “We extend our condolences to the families and friends of the victims and assure you that, as in previous cases where suspects were apprehended, we will diligently pursue justice for this horrific crime,” Ikenga stated.
