The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) seized a significant consignment of illicit drugs at the Tincan seaport in Lagos on Thursday, October 3, 2024. Authorities intercepted 100 parcels of Canadian Loud, weighing a total of 50 kilograms.
According to Femi Babafemi, the NDLEA Director of Media & Advocacy, the drugs were packed in 20 parcels within five large bags, hidden inside a container that also contained four imported vehicles from Canada. The container had previously been cleared from the ESS Libra Bonded Terminal in Ikorodu. However, thanks to reliable intelligence, NDLEA operatives managed to track it down to a warehouse in Ikorodu, where the drugs were discovered in one of the imported vehicles, specifically a Toyota Sienna bus. A suspect, identified as Abubakar Shuaibu Ibrahim, has been arrested in connection with this seizure.
In a related operation in Taraba, NDLEA officials intercepted a commercial bus, marked JAL 198 YQ, which was traveling from Onitsha in Anambra State to Jalingo. Upon searching the vehicle, agents found a large quantity of opioids, including tramadol, rohypnol, and codeine-based syrup, hidden in the vehicle’s body compartments. Two suspects, Pako Thomas and Emmanuel Anyigor, were taken into custody.
Additionally, another suspect, Chibuzor Okafor, was arrested in Wukari on October 2, with 80 blocks of cannabis weighing 38 kilograms concealed within bags of garri.
In Lagos, on Friday, October 4, Bolanle Ajenifuja was arrested in the Afo-Media area of Ojo, where 700 liters of skuchies—a mix of local chapman and illicit drugs—were confiscated. The same day, three other suspects—Ezekiel Akpele, Elijah Michael, and Goddard John—were apprehended when NDLEA operatives raided two cannabis farms located at Bridge Camp, a border community between Edo and Ondo states.
During these operations, approximately 9,966.332 kilograms of cannabis were destroyed across more than three hectares of farmland, along with 48 kilograms of processed psychoactive substances.
