A 37-year-old woman, Fatima Abubakar, has been sentenced to a year in prison by the Chief Magistrate Court II in Yola, Adamawa State, for brutally torturing her stepchildren, three-year-old Usman Abubakar and two-year-old Hafsat Abubakar.
The court ruled that she will serve her sentence at a correctional facility with no option for a fine.
Fatima Abubakar’s arrest was confirmed by the Adamawa State Police Command earlier in October, following allegations of physical abuse against the children. The case was brought before the court by the prosecuting officer, SP Iliya Akawu, alongside Fatima’s husband, Abubakar Yuguda, the children’s father. Both faced charges of child abuse, violating Sections 60 and 209 of the Penal Code Law of Adamawa State.
Magistrate M. A. Adamu, who presided over the case, found Fatima guilty of cruelty to the children, resulting in her imprisonment.
Additionally, Fatima was ordered to pay a fine of N100,000 to the government and N150,000 to cover the medical treatment costs of the abused children. She admitted to torturing the children, who had been left in her care.
While Fatima received her sentence, her husband, who was arraigned on similar child abuse charges, was granted bail. He secured his release after meeting the bail conditions, and his case has been adjourned for further hearing.
