The Nigeria Police Force has successfully rearrested 24-year-old Auwalu Aminu, who escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Maiduguri, Borno State, after a severe flood caused the prison walls to collapse.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Borno State Police Command spokesperson, Nahum Kenneth Daso, confirmed that Auwalu fled the prison in September 2024 during the flooding. The inmate had been serving a sentence for criminal conspiracy and theft.

Auwalu’s arrest was made possible after police received a credible tip-off regarding his whereabouts. He was apprehended on Wednesday in Banki town by operatives from the Bama Area Command and Banki Divisional Headquarters.

The official statement reads: “The Borno State Police Command, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police CP Mohammed Lawal Yusufu, has successfully re-arrested another escaped convict, one Auwalu Aminu, also known as Auwalu Kirkir, aged 24.

“Auwalu Aminu, who was convicted for criminal conspiracy and theft, escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Maiduguri due to the devastating flood incident in September 2024, which caused the collapse of the facility’s fence.

“On October 16, 2024, police received a credible tip-off that Auwalu Kirkir had been sighted in Banki town. A police patrol team quickly responded and apprehended him.

“The convict has been processed and will be handed over to the Nigeria Correctional Service for further action.”

The police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or information about fugitives to the nearest police station. They provided the following contact numbers for reporting: 0806 807 5581, 0802 347 3293.

In related news, SaharaReporters had earlier reported on September 10, 2024, that over 200 inmates had escaped after the devastating floods breached the walls of the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Maiduguri. According to a statement by NCoS spokesperson Umar Abubakar, 281 inmates escaped following the flooding, but seven were later recaptured and returned to the facility.
