Some officers with the Nigeria Police Force at Police Mopol Force 16 in Abeokuta, Ogun State, have raised serious allegations against their Squadron Commanding Officer, ACP Toyin Afolaogun. According to the officers, Afolaogun and his team have engaged in extortion, corruption, inhumane treatment, and unlawful detention of officers who dare to speak out about inadequate welfare.
The officers claim that Afolaogun regularly deploys them to private companies and residences, where he collects N200,000 per officer from the companies—funds that should include allowances for the officers’ feeding. However, they report that they rarely receive anything and are left without sufficient food.
One officer explained, “We’ve complained multiple times to the companies, who say they’ve already paid everything to our office. But if we contact our office, the commander orders our detention.”
Another officer expressed frustration, explaining that, while mobile officers are entitled to allowances, Afolaogun and his team allegedly keep the funds. He shared, “If the commander thinks we might expose this, he might give us N50,000 out of the N200,000. When we ask about our feeding, he just tells us to handle it ourselves.” He highlighted that with limited resources, feeding alone costs each officer N4,500 daily, totaling N135,000 a month, not counting transportation.
Other officers revealed they sometimes eat only once or twice a day. Numerous complaints have reportedly resulted in detention rather than resolution. “The constant cheating and corruption have left many of us demoralized and even begging to survive,” said one officer. They added that their clients are also concerned, as they pay substantial sums to Afolaogun’s administration, yet the officers receive only N45,000 or N50,000.
They’re calling for a thorough investigation, asserting that junior personnel feel marginalized, demotivated, and even mistreated under Afolaogun’s leadership. Officers have appealed to authorities for justice and equitable treatment, stressing the negative impact on morale and welfare among junior ranks.
Several companies were identified by the officers, alleging they pay N200,000 each to Afolaogun’s administration. These include Property Mart in Arepo, Bright Fish Company in Owode-Egba, America Cola in Mowe, Coleman Wire in Arepo, Lafarge Cement Company in Ewekoro, Oluwanana Multi Concept, Euro Global Company in Ota, Harmony Company in Odogbolu, and others.
In response, Afolaogun strongly denied the allegations, insisting he is not responsible for the squadron’s finances. Speaking to SaharaReporters on Monday, he said, “There is nothing like that at all. I’m not in charge of finances, and no one has ever approached me with such complaints or faced detention. I swear to God, these are lies.”
Afolaogun added that someone had threatened to tarnish his reputation on social media, claiming he would report similar accusations a month earlier. He stated, “If I have ever wrongfully detained anyone, may all my efforts fail. I am a Christian, and God is my witness. This is an attempt to smear my name.”
