The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed three officers involved in the tragic killing of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola, a student of Kwara State Polytechnic. The officers, identified as Inspector Abiodun Kayode (AP/No 233828), Inspector James Emmanuel (AP/No 287410), and Sergeant Oni Philip (F/No 497868), were relieved of their duties following an internal investigation.

In September, SaharaReporters reported that a police officer fatally shot Ishola along Panat Road, a busy area connecting Sango and ShopRite in Kwara State. Ishola, a part-time ND II student of Electrical/Electronics Engineering, was reportedly riding a commercial motorcycle when he was stopped by the police.

Abdullah, the deceased’s brother, explained that Qoyum was forced into a police patrol vehicle, where officers demanded money from him before the fatal shooting occurred.

On Monday evening, the Kwara State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, issued a statement confirming the dismissal of the officers. She revealed that the officers were found guilty of leaving their post, engaging in corrupt practices, and unlawfully exercising authority.

“We wish to provide an important update regarding the investigation into the tragic incident involving the death of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola on September 4, 2024,” the statement read. “Following a thorough investigation and internal disciplinary trial, the three officers—Inspector Abiodun Kayode, Inspector James Emmanuel, and Sergeant Oni Philip—were found guilty of abandoning their post, engaging in corrupt practices, and the unnecessary use of authority.”

Ejire-Adeyemi added, “As a result, they were dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force, effective October 4, 2024, and will soon be arraigned in court.”

The police spokesperson further emphasized that this decision reflects the firm stance of Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on upholding justice and accountability. “Under his leadership, the force is committed to ensuring professionalism, and any violations of ethical standards, particularly those resulting in loss of life, will be met with severe consequences,” she said.

The Kwara State Police Command, led by Commissioner of Police Victor Olaiya, extended its condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola, expressing deep sympathy and pledging support during this difficult time.

“We urge the public to remain patient and trust the legal process as we continue our commitment to maintaining law and order in Kwara State,” Ejire-Adeyemi concluded, thanking citizens for their cooperation and assuring them that justice has been served.
