Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has instructed the Assistant Inspector-General of Police overseeing Zone 11 in Osogbo to investigate a recent clash between officers of the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Osun State.
In a statement released Saturday evening through Force Public Relations Officer ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IG underscored the importance of respect and cooperation among all security personnel. He emphasized that these values are crucial for law enforcement officers to carry out their duties effectively and within legal boundaries.
Egbetokun called for peace and assured the public of the police’s commitment to maintaining productive collaboration with other security agencies to create a safer Nigeria.
The altercation between police officers and NSCDC personnel was caught on camera earlier this week, showing both groups engaging in a physical confrontation. The incident reportedly took place at Elizabeth Estate, Abere in Osogbo, when police officers attempted to arrest a resident but were allegedly blocked by NSCDC operatives. A few days later, the police reportedly returned, leading to further conflict with the NSCDC.
The IG’s statement referenced a viral video depicting the clash, expressing dissatisfaction over the unprofessional display. He has since ordered a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the confrontation. The IG reminded security operatives of his previous statements on the necessity of synergy and mutual respect among agencies, as outlined in a recent press release dated October 15, 2023.
Egbetokun reiterated the importance of “esprit de corps”—a spirit of unity and cooperation across all security agencies—as essential for carrying out law enforcement duties. He reassured Nigerians that the police force would continue working closely with other security bodies to foster a secure environment for the nation.
