Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has directed a probe into the actions of federal and state high court judges involved in issuing conflicting political rulings in Rivers State. Those judges are now summoned for investigation to address concerns over their recent judgments.
Earlier this week, Justice Kekere-Ekun held a meeting with members of a special panel from the National Judicial Council (NJC) at her office. She instructed them to fast-track the inquiry and submit their findings by the end of the week. This panel, chaired by a former justice of the Court of Appeal, is responsible for examining how the judiciary has managed cases linked to the ongoing political rift between Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former governor of the state.
The panel is composed of senior judicial figures, including two court heads, giving it the mandate to thoroughly investigate the conduct of the judges involved. Tribune reports that Chief Justice Kekere-Ekun also summoned the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court for questioning on Tuesday to discuss these cases more closely.
While the NJC has received multiple complaints regarding these court cases, it was the Chief Justice herself who called for a comprehensive probe, driven by widespread public concerns over the cases.
