The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is preparing for a National Executive Council meeting to address the recent rise in the price of Premium Motor Spirit, commonly known as petrol.

Reports indicate that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has increased fuel prices significantly. In Abuja, the price rose from N897 per litre to N1,030; in Lagos, it climbed from N855 to N998; while prices in the North-East reached N1,070. Other regions saw similar increases, with South-West prices at N1,025, South-East at N1,045, and South-South at N1,075.

This hike has sparked widespread criticism among Nigerians, many of whom are urging President Bola Tinubu to reconsider the price increase.

In a recent interview with Arise Television, NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero stated that the Congress executives will convene on the issue by next week. He emphasized that the NLC follows a structured process before declaring any strike action.

Ajaero explained, “No NLC president can unilaterally decide to strike without consulting the relevant bodies, whether the Central Working Committee or the National Executive Council. We have our internal procedures to ensure that decisions reflect the members’ views.”

He assured that the meeting would take place soon to deliberate on the next steps, reinforcing that the leader’s personal opinion should not overshadow the collective stance of the members.
