The Niger State Commissioner for Secondary and Tertiary Health, Bello Tukur, has reported that cholera cases in the state have surged to 289, with 17 deaths and nine people currently hospitalized. The outbreak has affected 11 local government areas in the state.
Tukur shared this information during his appearance before the Niger State House of Assembly, where both he and the Minister of Primary Health were summoned to address the growing concerns about the cholera outbreak across Nigeria.
In his statement, the Commissioner outlined the state’s efforts to contain the epidemic, revealing that a specialized committee has been set up to manage the crisis. He highlighted the ongoing coordination between primary, secondary, and tertiary healthcare providers to tackle the situation more effectively.
Tukur added that the state is drawing on expert knowledge and strategic plans to improve its preparedness for handling outbreaks of this scale.
Pharmacist Umar Nasiru, the Chairman of the House Standing Committee on Primary and Secondary Health and representative of Paikoro Constituency, advised the public to refrain from open defecation, dispose of waste properly, and ensure that water from unfamiliar sources is boiled before consumption.
He also urged people to seek medical care if they experience symptoms of diarrhea, warning against self-medication as a treatment option.
