The Kano State government, led by Governor Abba Yusuf, has rescinded the accreditation of 14 journalists assigned to cover government activities.

Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, the spokesperson for the governor, communicated the decision to the affected journalists through a message on Monday, instructing them to return to their respective organizations for replacement personnel.

Although an official reason for this action was not provided, Dawakin-Tofa’s message suggested that “recent developments” may have influenced the decision, raising questions among those in the media.

Governor Abba Yusuf, who took office on May 29, 2023, previously served as the commissioner for Works, Housing, and Transport in Kano State from 2011 to 2015. His administration has faced its share of legal hurdles, including a recent Supreme Court ruling that upheld his election as governor.

Despite the significant impact of this decision, the exact reasons behind the withdrawal of the journalists’ accreditations remain unclear. “Gentlemen of the press, I would like to express my gratitude for your commendable work over the past year and a few months. Regrettably, while I was in the Republic of Serbia last week, some undisclosed issues arose that required the leadership to make a crucial decision at this time,” the spokesperson stated.

Among those affected are directors, producers, and cameramen from various media organizations. The list of names includes Aliyu Yusuf, Director of Public Enlightenment; Sani Suraj Abubakar, PRO; Adamu Dabo, Chairman Crew from FRCN; Naziru Yau, ARTV; Sadiq Sani AA, ARTV; Rabiu Sunusi, Triumph; Umar Sheka, Freedom; Jabir Dan’abba, Nasara; Labaran Sound; Simon, AIT cameraman; Nasiru Danhaki, NTA; Abdullahi Sule, driver; Murtala Baba Kusa, Express; and Ibrahim Muazzam, Radio Kano.
