The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has accused the Nigerian government, under President Bola Tinubu, of orchestrating the killing of its National Coordinator for Biafran Land, Mr. Ikechukwu Ugwuoha.
In a statement released on Monday by IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, the group claimed that Ugwuoha was assassinated near his residence in Aba, Abia State, on Friday by operatives allegedly hired by the Nigerian government.
According to Powerful, the assassination was intended to instill fear among IPOB members and supporters. However, he insisted that the group is no longer intimidated by such tactics. “Those responsible for this heinous act have condemned themselves to sleepless nights because we will not rest,” he said.
He added that IPOB’s intelligence unit, known as the M.Branch, has been tasked with identifying the perpetrators, and that appropriate retaliation would be carried out against those involved in the killing. “As we mourn our trusted and dependable Biafran Land Coordinator, we urge all Biafrans, M. Branch ESN operatives, IPOB volunteers, and coordinators to remain vigilant and take necessary security measures against our enemies,” Powerful stated.
He urged IPOB members to stay resolute, emphasizing that the group has overcome challenges in the past and would continue to emerge stronger. “The Nigerian government and its provocateurs aim to provoke IPOB into changing the course of its peaceful struggle, but we will not fall into that trap. We will not harm our own people,” he added.
Powerful also vowed that IPOB would defend itself and pursue those responsible for Ugwuoha’s death. “The assassination of Ikechukwu Ugwuoha will not go unavenged. Those who terrorized his family by killing him in front of them will be found and will receive the same fate. He who lives by the sword shall die by the sword,” Powerful concluded.
