The House of Representatives has announced plans to summon an e-hailing driver in Abuja who was reportedly assaulted by Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House. This information was shared by Francis Waive, the Chairman of the House Committee on Rules and Business, during an appearance on a TVC program.

Waive emphasized that the House will adhere to the fundamental principles of fair hearing and rule of law throughout the investigation of the incident. He stated, “In situations like this, the House provides a platform for all parties involved to express their perspectives. In this case, the driver will be invited by the Committee on Ethics and Privileges to share his account, while the honorable member will also present his version.”

Furthermore, Waive noted that others connected to the incident, such as individuals who made relevant phone calls, would also be included in the hearings. He reassured the public that the proceedings would be conducted transparently, as both public and investigative hearings are generally open.

The incident gained significant attention after a viral video surfaced online, showing Ikwechegh physically assaulting the Bolt driver. The lawmaker, who represents the Aba North and South Federal Constituency in Abia State, was seen slapping the driver multiple times and verbally abusing him for requesting that he approach his car to receive a delivery.

Ikwechegh went as far as to threaten the driver, claiming he could make him “disappear” from Nigeria without consequences, even if the driver sought assistance from the Inspector-General of Police. He also refused to compensate the driver, proudly asserting his status as a member of the House of Representatives. The altercation escalated as he broke the driver’s phone and tore his clothes, deeming the driver’s actions disrespectful.

In response to the incident, the Nigeria Police Force announced that an “impartial” investigation is underway. In a statement released on Wednesday by ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force’s Public Relations Officer, the police reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring justice is achieved in this case.
