The House of Representatives has launched an investigation into allegations of unfair hiring practices and unauthorized spending by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), and Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). The probe aims to assess if these agencies have adhered to the Federal Character principles mandated by the 1999 Nigerian Constitution (as amended).

This decision came in response to a motion brought forward by Rep. Ali Isa during Thursday’s plenary session. Isa’s motion raised serious concerns over perceived biases in employment practices and extra-budgetary spending within these organizations. He cited Section 14(3) of the Nigerian Constitution, emphasizing the importance of federal character in recruitment to ensure fairness and inclusivity.

Rep. Isa also voiced concerns over reports that funds intended for essential statutory operations were being misappropriated for non-essential items, violating the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2007. He stressed the pivotal role that the FIRS, CAC, and NDIC play in Nigeria’s economy, from tax management and corporate regulation to safeguarding deposits.

“If proven true, these claims of lopsided employment and unauthorized spending could erode principles of fairness, equality, and transparency,” Rep. Isa remarked.

Following this, the House approved the motion, with a directive for the committee to deliver a comprehensive report within four weeks.
