The House of Representatives has successfully passed a bill aimed at establishing a special armed squad within the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), enhancing road traffic management and safety measures. This significant legislation is designed to empower the FRSC with exclusive responsibilities related to traffic regulation, road obstruction removal, and public safety education.
The bill, which has now moved to its second reading, was sponsored by Representatives Abiodun Derin Adesida and Olaide Lateef Muhammed. Its objective is to amend the FRSC Act of 2007, thereby granting the corps greater authority and improved operational capabilities.
Key aspects of the proposed legislation include the formation of the FRSC Special Armed Squad and enhanced benefits for officers at the Deputy Corp Marshal rank, particularly regarding retirement plans. Furthermore, the bill aims to assign the FRSC exclusive control over managing road traffic, reducing accidents, overseeing road users, and enforcing traffic laws on public roadways.
The bill passed with unanimous support during a voice vote, paving the way for its second reading.
Additionally, the House has approved a motion introduced by Representative Garba Ibrahim Muhammad, which calls for the FRSC to increase its reliance on technology for road safety enforcement. The motion encourages the adoption of systems such as Automatic Vehicle Location, Automated Traffic Enforcement, and advanced data analytics to improve enforcement efficacy, curb traffic violations, and bolster overall road safety.
This motion has been referred to the House Committee on the FRSC for further consideration.
