Motorists and pedestrians faced significant disruptions this weekend on the Udeagbara Bypass Road in Ahiaba Umueze Owuala, Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Area, Abia State, due to severe flooding caused by recent heavy rains.
The road was inaugurated just months ago by Governor Alex Otti as part of a broader infrastructure initiative. Governor Otti had highlighted the importance of this road, along with others, for improving access and boosting the local economy. In his remarks, he noted that the Udeagbala and Umuimo roads serve as key alternative routes from the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway to the busy Aba-Owerri Road and the Abia State University Teaching Hospital.
However, community residents have quickly raised alarms about the road and drainage system’s inadequate performance. Initially seen as a promise for improved infrastructure, the road has instead turned into a frustration point, plagued by persistent flooding.
The area, which includes the Abia State Teaching Hospital, is now struggling with chronic waterlogging, severely hindering daily activities. Many residents report being unable to leave their homes until floodwaters recede, particularly following rainstorms.
In a live video posted on Sunday, local resident Possible Nwaohamuo detailed the flooding crisis and called for urgent government action. He emphasized the impact on families, schools, and places of worship, which have all been affected by the overwhelming floodwaters.
“The flooding is a disaster for our community,” Nwaohamuo stated. “We cannot go about our daily activities in peace. Our children can’t attend school, and our places of worship are underwater. We urgently need government intervention.”
Despite the project’s recent completion, concerns are mounting about the quality of construction and the sustainability of such infrastructure in the face of natural challenges.
