Residents of Udaba, a community in Edo State, are facing a tragic ordeal as severe flooding has unearthed graves, displacing corpses from their final resting places.
The flood, which has caused widespread destruction, has left communities overwhelmed and fearful. This disaster has extended beyond Udaba, affecting multiple areas like Anegbete, Ekperi, Osomhegbe, Ogoimeri, Iyowa, Ofukpu, Ifekhu, Agenebode, Ubiaja, and Ilushi across Etsako East, Etsako Central, and Esan South East local government areas, according to PM News.
Joseph Odemokpai, a Councillor for Ward 8 in Etsako Central, confirmed the distressing situation. “In Udaba, some dead bodies have been washed away from their graves by the flood,” he shared, describing the difficult reality faced by the locals.
The flooding has not only displaced corpses but also claimed lives due to the severe cold that has accompanied it. “Some people have died because of the cold brought by the flood,” Odemokpai stated, highlighting the additional risks from the disaster.
He further explained the extent of the damage, saying, “Houses, farmlands, and crops—including cassava, rice, and yam—are all submerged, while farm produce, livestock, and personal belongings have been swept away by the flood.”
The floodwaters remain high, keeping communities in critical condition. Efforts are ongoing to relocate residents to safety camps, yet the crisis persists.
Flooding has also heavily impacted Ward 9 and Ward 10, affecting communities such as Anegbete, Udochi, Ogomere, and Ifekhu, alongside Ofukpo and several others in the affected local government areas.
While the local councils are working to respond, Odemokpai has appealed to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Edo State Emergency Management Agency (EdoSEMA) for further assistance to support the communities in distress.
