A fire broke out at the well-known Kantin Kwari textile market in Kano on Saturday night, leading to significant destruction and panic among local traders. The blaze started around 7 p.m. on Gidan Inuwa Mai Mai Bayajidda Street and quickly spread to several buildings in the bustling market.
Balarabe Tatari, chairman of the traders’ association, reported that the prompt response from the Federal Fire Service, Kano State Fire Service, and private fire companies was crucial in controlling the situation. Firefighting teams from nearby markets, including Sabon Gari, Dawanau, and Singa, also provided essential support.
“The quick action from the Kano State Fire Service and reinforcements helped extinguish the fire,” Tatari stated. However, he raised concerns about the market’s congestion and inadequate access roads, which he believes contributed to the fire’s rapid spread before help could arrive.
In response to the incident, security personnel from the Department of State Services and the Nigeria Police Force were deployed to ensure safety in the affected area. Tatari urged the state government to take more decisive steps to clear structures that hinder movement and drainage within the market.
Saminu Abdullahi, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, confirmed the incident when contacted.
