Taiwo Obasanjo, the estranged wife of Nigeria’s former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has reportedly been evicted from her residence in Abuja due to several years of unpaid rent. The property, located at 30 Jessie Jackson Street in Asokoro, was the subject of a 30-day eviction notice issued by the landlord. Despite this warning, Taiwo failed to settle her debt or vacate the premises.

Olusegun Obasanjo, a former military head of state (1976-1979) and president (1999-2007), has long been estranged from Taiwo. However, the former president’s name has resurfaced due to this incident. Taiwo was forcibly removed from the residence on Friday, October 18, 2024, after years of rent non-payment.

“She was evicted by her landlord last Friday due to unpaid rent for several years. She couldn’t settle her bills and was publicly humiliated, with her belongings thrown outside. As of now, her properties remain outside the building,” an inside source told SaharaReporters.

In 2023, Taiwo made headlines when she publicly accused her former husband of being cruel during their marriage. This outburst came after she made an appeal for Obasanjo’s forgiveness, following a controversy involving the former president and traditional rulers in Iseyin, Oyo State. Obasanjo had criticized the rulers for not standing to greet him during an official visit, sparking public debate.

Taiwo’s public request for forgiveness did not sit well with the former president, who swiftly distanced himself from her, claiming she suffered from mental illness and asserting that she was neither his wife nor a member of his family, despite their two children together.

In response to Obasanjo’s harsh disclaimer, Taiwo fired back, accusing him of arrogance and recalling past issues in their marriage. She said: “Have you not begged me many times in the past to come back to you? And now, you question my mental state? You loved me so much that you even fought with your first wife because of me. You still feel hurt that I left you and survived it.”

Taiwo went further, questioning the legitimacy of Obasanjo’s current relationships, challenging him to prove that he properly married his present partner, as required by tradition and law.
