Joe Foundation Hospital, situated in Iheaka within the Igboeze South Local Government Area of Enugu State, has been shut down amid allegations of human organ trafficking. This situation has left families of current and former patients anxious about the possibility that their loved ones may have fallen victim to these illicit activities.

When reporters visited the hospital on Friday morning, it was found locked and deserted, a stark contrast to its usual bustling environment. Concerns about the hospital’s practices escalated earlier this week when reports surfaced regarding the arrest of the medical director, known locally as Dr. Obara. This followed complications experienced by a patient post-surgery, leading to a medical examination by another doctor, which revealed that one of the patient’s kidneys had been removed.

Residents expressed confusion and concern. “We have no idea what is happening at the hospital,” said one local. “The doctor was taken away to Enugu, and now the place is closed. It seems the government has sealed it, but there’s no official notice posted.”

One man, who preferred to remain anonymous, mentioned his distress over his nephew, who had undergone surgery at the hospital. “I need to make sure his kidney is still intact. He’s been complaining of persistent pain, and this same doctor has been treating him. We’re worried we might also be victims,” he said.

Social media influencer Chijinkem Ugwuanyi previously highlighted allegations against the medical director of Joe Foundation Hospital. According to Ugwuanyi, Dr. Obara, whose real name is Ulogwu Obara, was reportedly involved in organ trafficking schemes.

He shared details of a case where a family took their child in for a routine appendectomy, only for the child’s health to deteriorate post-surgery. Despite multiple visits to the hospital and the doctor attributing the child’s condition to various illnesses, no improvement was seen. Eventually, when the family sought help from other medical facilities, it was confirmed that the child’s kidney had been harvested.

The family reported the case to the police, and following thorough investigations, it became evident that Dr. Obara had been profiting from these activities for an extended period. Allegations suggest that he often misdiagnosed patients and, after surgeries, left them in critical conditions, leading to many deaths.
