Parents of youths arrested during the recent #EndBadGovernance protests have staged a demonstration at the Kano State House of Assembly, demanding the immediate release of their children. The parents are calling for justice and expressing concerns over the harsh treatment their children are allegedly facing in detention.

Malam Nura Ahmad, who spoke on behalf of the group, revealed that around 70 youths were arrested and later transferred to Abuja, where they are reportedly enduring poor living conditions and mistreatment.

The protests, which took place from August 1 to August 10 across the country, were aimed at voicing discontent with the economic hardship and governance issues under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Ahmad raised concerns over the detainees’ dire conditions, revealing that the youths have not been allowed to bathe since their arrest and are being fed only once a day. The parents expressed frustration at their failed attempts to secure bail for their children, stating that every effort to gain their freedom has been blocked.

Additionally, the parents noted that the detainees had been denied access to legal counsel, exacerbating their anxiety over the wellbeing of their children.

One of the parents, Fatima Yusuf Umar, shared her distressing experience. She recounted her last conversation with her son, who revealed that he was struggling with his vision due to the brutal treatment he was undergoing in detention.

In response to the protest, the Majority Leader of the Kano State Assembly, who met with the concerned parents, assured them that steps would be taken to facilitate bail for the youths. He also urged the Attorney General and Minister of Justice to step in and ensure that the detainees are granted bail promptly.
