Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai asserted during a Hausa program on Freedom Radio in Kaduna on Tuesday that he would swear on the Quran to affirm his innocence regarding allegations of corruption during his time in office.

El-Rufai expressed that he was satisfied with what he had prior to becoming governor and emphasized his commitment to public service. His administration was recently accused by the Kaduna State House of Assembly of misappropriating over N423 billion during his eight-year tenure. El-Rufai and his supporters have vehemently denied these claims, asserting that they are victims of a political witch hunt orchestrated by the Assembly and the current state government.

“I remained silent to see how things would unfold, but I constantly ask God for guidance,” he said. “As a human being, I strive not to betray the trust of the people.”

He went on to challenge former governors and current leaders to take an oath affirming their own integrity, stating, “Whenever they decide to swear on the Quran that they have never misappropriated public funds, I will do the same. I entered public service to serve the people, not to steal. I thank God for my contentment even before becoming governor.”

El-Rufai lamented the lack of specific accusations detailing how the funds were mismanaged, stating, “They are targeting my allies by summoning them to the ICPC and EFCC to tarnish their reputations. I have left everything in God’s hands after praying two Raka’at on Friday night, seeking His judgment.”

He expressed his discontent over the ongoing situation, describing it as painful yet a part of life. “We have reported these issues to God, and I trust we will receive justice,” he remarked. While he has instructed his lawyers to pursue legal action against attempts to damage his reputation, he stated that he is focusing on his daily activities, including reading and writing.

El-Rufai noted that serving the public continues beyond holding office, emphasizing a commitment to working alongside those who genuinely seek to serve the people. “Our intention has never been to enrich ourselves through politics,” he asserted, expressing hope for development in the region.

Looking ahead, he mentioned plans to re-enter politics by 2027, declaring, “There is no retirement in politics like there is in other jobs. We will return to continue our work, God willing.”
