A truck belonging to the Dangote Group experienced brake failure on Friday, resulting in the death of one motorist and injuring two others in the Maryland area of Lagos State.

Reports indicate that the truck was transporting concrete when it collided with a vehicle owned by JustRite, a prominent retail company. Tragically, the driver of the JustRite truck, who was in the process of loading goods at the time of the incident, was killed instantly due to the impact.

Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the head of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), confirmed that after the initial collision, the Dangote truck lost control and crashed into a nearby building, resulting in injuries to two additional individuals.

Emergency services responded promptly to the scene; however, the driver of the JustRite truck was pronounced dead at the site. Oke-Osanyintolu noted that investigations are underway to determine the specific cause of the brake failure, while the injured victims are currently receiving treatment at a local hospital.

He stated, “The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, activated the LRT from Command and Control Centre, Alausa, after receiving distress calls via the 767/112 Toll-Free lines at 12:08 p.m.”

Upon arrival, the Tiger Response Team discovered that the accident involved a MACK concrete mixer truck, with registration number DGW 208 XA, owned by Dangote, and a TATA truck, registration number SMK 906 YE.

Oke-Osanyintolu further explained that LASEMA personnel and police officers were mobilized to the accident site. He attributed the cause of the collision to brake failure.

“Investigations conducted by the response team revealed that the Dangote truck suffered a mechanical failure (brakes), lost control, and collided with the JustRite truck, whose driver was loading items at the time. The truck then crashed into a building adjacent to the road and injured two individuals in the process,” he added.

The injured victims were taken to Gbagada General Hospital for urgent medical care, while the body of the deceased driver was returned to his family for final arrangements.
