The Court of Appeal in Abuja has scheduled October 17 for the hearing of appeals regarding the ongoing dispute over the Kano emirship. This case involves several legal challenges concerning the appointment of the Emir of Kano, a position at the center of multiple lawsuits.

On Monday, a three-member panel of justices, headed by Justice Mohammed Mustapha, reserved the judgment after hearing arguments from the lawyers representing the different parties involved.

Two key appeals are being considered. The first was filed by Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero against the Attorney General of Kano State and ten others. The second case involves the Kano State House of Assembly and Alhaji Aminu Babba Dan Agundi, along with six other parties.

The court will also address a motion seeking to stay the execution of a July 25 judgment related to the enforcement of fundamental rights.

This legal battle follows a Federal High Court ruling in Kano, delivered by Justice Abdullahi Liman. On May 23, the court nullified Governor Abba Yusuf’s decision to depose Emir Ado Bayero and replace him with Muhammadu Sanusi II. The court also declared the Kano Emirate Council (Repeal) Bill, 2024, passed by the Kano State House of Assembly, as “null and void,” effectively reinstating Bayero’s position.

Justice Liman noted that the actions of the Kano State government violated a previous court order, adding that “the balance of convenience” favored Alhaji Aminu Babba Dan Agundi, who had challenged the legality of Bayero’s removal.

Despite this, a separate ruling by a Kano State High Court has restrained Ado Bayero from acting as the emir, further complicating the situation.
