Justice Emeka Nwite has upheld the leadership of Julius Abure, confirming his position as the legitimate chair of the Labour Party (LP). In a ruling, the judge validated the outcomes of the March 2024 convention held in Nnewi, which established the party’s national leadership. Additionally, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was instructed to recognize Abure, countering its prior claim that his leadership was illegitimate.
INEC had contended that the convention in Anambra State did not adhere to constitutional guidelines and electoral regulations, arguing that the party had not fulfilled the necessary legal requirements to hold the gathering. They asserted that Abure’s term was set to expire in June 2024. Meanwhile, a stakeholders meeting took place in September in Umuahia, led by party figures including presidential candidate Peter Obi and Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti. During this meeting, a caretaker committee was formed, headed by former Finance Minister Nenadi Usman, to address internal conflicts and outline a path forward.
However, Abure’s national working committee deemed this meeting illegitimate and ineffective.
Following the court’s decision on Tuesday, Abure expressed his gratitude, emphasizing that the ruling is a victory for justice and democracy. He acknowledged that the Federal High Court in Abuja, under Justice Nwite, reinforced the legitimacy of the Nnewi convention. “This victory is not solely mine; it signifies the triumph of the rule of law and the validation of our leadership,” Abure stated. He also expressed thanks to the judiciary, particularly praising Justice Nwite for his courage and integrity in delivering a judgment that prioritized justice amidst external pressures. He reiterated that this ruling restores faith in Nigeria’s judicial system.
Abure extended appreciation to Justice Omotosho of the Federal High Court for his earlier validation of the Nnewi convention, which served as a basis for subsequent rulings.
In light of the court’s decision, Abure expressed a desire for reconciliation, offering forgiveness to those who sought to undermine the party. He urged them to reflect on their actions and work towards mending relationships within the party, emphasizing that collective healing is essential for progress. He also called on Peter Obi to assist in unifying the party for the greater good of Nigeria.
