In a recent interview on Arise TV, Chief of Defense Staff General Christopher Musa addressed allegations made by Senator Adams Oshiomhole regarding the alleged diversion of military funds. Oshiomhole claimed that senior military officers were misappropriating funds to construct universities and engage in community service in their hometowns, rather than prioritizing military operations.
General Musa defended the integrity of the military, asserting its professionalism and dedication to duty. He explained that confronting insurgencies, such as Boko Haram, falls under “asymmetric warfare,” a complex form of conflict that involves more than straightforward combat strategies. The General emphasized that military expenditures are subject to rigorous oversight, with regular audits ensuring accountability.
He further clarified the university construction claims, stating that part of the military’s strategy includes “non-kinetic” approaches, which encompass community outreach and infrastructure development. This strategy is vital in asymmetric warfare, as it fosters trust within communities and diminishes insurgent influence.
General Musa stated, “I can assure you that the military is highly professional. Every General currently in our ranks has a minimum of 25 years of service. We have engaged in missions in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and elsewhere, and we continue to confront challenges in our country. Asymmetric warfare requires unique operations. Regarding transparency, we are constantly scrutinized, with auditors regularly assessing our activities. The use of funds for university projects falls under the non-kinetic aspect of our operations.”
