A 41-year-old Canadian woman, Adrienne Munju, was apprehended by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. She was caught attempting to import a substantial shipment of ‘Canadian Loud,’ a potent strain of synthetic cannabis.
Munju was arrested on Thursday, October 3, 2024, during the passenger clearance process for a KLM flight arriving from Canada. A thorough inspection of her three bags revealed a total of 74 parcels containing the illegal substance, weighing 35.20 kilograms, concealed in two of the bags. Femi Babafemi, NDLEA Director of Media & Advocacy, shared the details in a statement on Sunday.
According to the statement, Munju claimed that she was recruited through an online platform to traffic the drugs for a payment of 10,000 Canadian dollars, contingent on successful delivery in Lagos. She explained that she accepted the offer to fund her master’s degree program in Canada.
In a separate operation, NDLEA agents at the Port Harcourt Ports in Rivers State intercepted a staggering 13,298,000 pills of various opioids, including Tramadol, Tramaking Quick Action, Tamol-X, Royal Tapentadol, and Carisoprodol. Additionally, they seized 338,253 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup, all valued at over N9 billion.
These drugs were discovered in three containers arriving from India, during a 100% joint examination conducted by NDLEA personnel, customs officials, and other port authorities on October 2 and 3, 2024.
