Security forces in Rivers State successfully thwarted an attempted robbery at the office of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission early Friday morning. The incident occurred around 1 am when individuals dressed in police uniforms tried to breach the gates and access the strong room containing sensitive electoral materials for the upcoming local government elections.
Witnesses, who spoke anonymously, reported that the plot was interrupted when vigilant security personnel alerted the commission’s officials and relevant authorities. This prompted an immediate notification to Governor Siminalayi Fubara about the situation.
In response, the governor assembled a team comprising government officials, National Assembly lawmakers, political stakeholders, and community leaders to assess the scene. Addressing reporters outside the RSIEC office on Aba Road in Port Harcourt, Fubara condemned the attempt and praised the security forces for their quick response.
A government source further noted that the governor emphasized that local government elections are internal matters for the states. He urged those attempting to disrupt the electoral process to respect the state’s autonomy and refrain from interference.
Currently, reports indicate that several government officials, stakeholders, and supporters are maintaining a vigil at the RSIEC facility to ensure its security.
Attempts to reach the state Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko, for comment were unsuccessful as her phone was not connecting. She had not yet responded to a text message from our reporter as of Friday morning.
