A group of students celebrating the victory of Taiwo Owolewa, the newly elected Coordinator of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Southwest (Zone D), was seen firing gunshots into the air on Friday.
Owolewa was elected to his position during a convention held on Thursday in Akure, Ondo State.
Footage released by Owolewa’s media team shows members of his convoy indiscriminately shooting into the sky as they welcomed him back to Ekiti State, his home.
The media team shared the following caption along with the video across various platforms: “OWOLEWA TAIWO BACK TO EKITI IN GRAND STYLES. The people of Ekiti State are ecstatic to welcome back Owolewa Taiwo, the newly elected Coordinator, in grand style. This highly anticipated homecoming marks the beginning of a transformative era for NANS ZONE D, and stakeholders, students, senators, and families are thrilled to have Owolewa Taiwo at the helm. As the Ekiti community rallies around their new leader, they are eager to witness the positive change and progress that Owolewa Taiwo’s vision promises to bring.”
However, the celebratory display has drawn criticism on social media, with some Nigerians calling for Owolewa’s arrest. One commentator remarked, “He (Taiwo) should be arrested until he provides those in his convoy shooting in the air in public. Imagine, in broad daylight, gunshots from non-security agents ringing out in Ado-Ekiti all in the name of celebrating.”
