In a developing story, Abuja-based Bolt driver Stephen Abuwatseya has initiated legal action against Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, a representative from Abia State in Nigeria’s House of Representatives. The complaint, filed in response to an alleged assault, has sparked significant media attention.

Abuwatseya’s legal counsel, Deji Adeyanju, confirmed the scheduled court appearance, saying, “We are heading to the Kuje Magistrate Court for the arraignment of the honourable member who assaulted our client, Mr. Stephen, a Bolt driver.” Adeyanju extended an open invitation to media outlets, urging them to cover the proceedings set for noon at the Kuje Magistrate Court.

SaharaReporters previously reported that the Nigerian Police Force had initiated an “unbiased” investigation into the matter involving Alex Ikwechegh. This probe follows the circulation of a viral video on social media depicting the legislator allegedly assaulting the driver.

The video, which sparked widespread criticism, shows Ikwechegh, who represents Aba North and South Federal Constituency, repeatedly slapping the driver and using derogatory language after the driver asked him to retrieve a package from the vehicle. During the altercation, Ikwechegh allegedly threatened the driver, stating he could make him “disappear from Nigeria” without consequence, even if he reported the incident to the Inspector-General of Police.

Further allegations suggest that Ikwechegh also refused to compensate the driver, broke his mobile phone, and tore his clothing, all while asserting his position as a member of the House of Representatives. Witnesses claim he threatened to detain the driver in a “generator house” if he continued to challenge him.

On Wednesday, the Nigerian Police Force released a statement through its Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, affirming their commitment to delivering justice. “In response to the assault and threats made by Hon. Alexander Mascot Ikwechegh against a Bolt driver, Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya, the Nigeria Police Force has launched a fair investigation to ensure that justice prevails,” the statement read in part. The incident allegedly occurred on October 27, 2024, when Abuwatseya arrived to deliver a package at Ikwechegh’s residence on Zamfara Crescent in Maitama, Abuja.

The arraignment marks a significant step as the case unfolds, with many watching closely to see if justice will indeed be served.
