An official of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Emeason Chima, has been kidnapped by gunmen in Enugu State. Chima, who works with the RS4.211 Ugbokolo unit, was abducted on Saturday near Maduka University, in the Nsukka area of Enugu.
According to a senior FRSC official, the kidnappers have demanded a ransom of N50 million for Chima’s release. The official, who spoke anonymously as they weren’t authorized to brief the press, confirmed that Chima was alone in his car when he was attacked and taken by the gunmen.
An internal memo circulated within the FRSC confirmed that the kidnappers, using Chima’s phone, contacted the Ugbokolo unit commander, Emmanuel Al-Hassan, to make the ransom demand. The memo detailed, “The Command has received information about the abduction of SRMA Emeason Chima. The incident occurred on Nsukka Enugu Road, near OPI junction, as the staff was driving a Toyota saloon car alone when he was intercepted and taken.”
It added, “The unit commander has been contacted by the kidnappers, who are demanding N50 million. Further details will be provided as events unfold.”
The South-East region of Nigeria has recently experienced a spike in insecurity, with numerous incidents involving kidnappings, ransom demands, and, in some cases, fatalities. Government officials, security personnel, and infrastructure have all been targets. The Nigerian government has blamed the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) for many of these attacks, though the group has consistently denied any involvement.
