A fresh protest took place Friday as young residents blocked the Port Harcourt/Owerri highway at Ohaji, a boundary town between Rivers and Imo states, to protest against economic hardship and poor governance.
The demonstrators, primarily young people, carried placards bearing various slogans and chanted anti-government songs. Using a coffin and canopies, they obstructed the key highway connecting Nigeria’s South-South and South-East regions.
The protesters remained peaceful but voiced strong concerns about the deteriorating state of the highway. “This protest is to express our frustration with the economic hardship. We’ve blocked the Port Harcourt-Owerri Expressway using a coffin and canopies,” explained a local youth.
Representing the youth of Ohaji Egbema, a protester shared, “We’re protesting bad governance, poor roads, no electricity, and constant hunger. We have no clean water or reliable power in this community.”
This protest follows another in Rivers State’s Khana Local Government Area earlier in October, where tensions led to the death of at least one person.
