Borno State has received a significant shipment of cholera vaccines, with the state’s Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Prof. Baba Mallam, announcing the arrival of 669,569 doses in Maiduguri. This initiative is crucial given the increased risk of waterborne diseases following the recent floods in the area.

During the handover, represented by Fati Ali, the State Director of Disease Control and Immunisation from the Borno State Primary Healthcare Development Board, it was emphasized that UNICEF is a key partner in this effort. “We have received 669,569 doses of cholera vaccines, in addition to over 300,000 doses previously delivered. We urge everyone to visit their nearest healthcare facilities to get vaccinated,” Ali stated.

UNICEF’s Chief of the Maiduguri field office, Dr. Gerida Birukila, also spoke at the event, urging residents to embrace the oral vaccines. He reassured the public about their safety and the absence of significant side effects. Dr. Birukila pointed out that these vaccines are vital for protecting vulnerable populations, especially those in crowded areas and children at higher risk of contracting cholera.
