A review of budget performance documents by SaharaReporters reveals that the Bayelsa State government has allocated N230.3 million for a praise night and thanksgiving service, alongside another N190 million for Christmas decorations. The total budget for these events amounts to N420 million.
So far, N42 million has been spent on praise night and thanksgiving services, while N7 million has been disbursed for Christmas decorations within the first and second quarters of the year. This expenditure has sparked concerns amid growing calls for more prudent use of public funds.
Bayelsa State is grappling with significant developmental challenges. The state has been heavily affected by flooding, with several communities devastated and numerous residents displaced. Despite these pressing needs, substantial funds are being allocated to celebrations.
In 2022, unemployment in Bayelsa was recorded at 36.7%. Additionally, 1.41 million people are considered to be living in poverty in the state. Furthermore, 32% of school-age children do not have access to education.
The state also ranks poorly in terms of basic amenities. A staggering 95% of households in Bayelsa lack access to sanitary facilities, and 78% of the population does not have clean drinking water. Health preparedness in the state has been rated poorly, with Bayelsa receiving one of the lowest scores in the country, according to a report by SBM Intelligence.
These figures have raised concerns about the state government’s handling of its resources, particularly given the ongoing developmental challenges. Many have questioned the priority placed on festivities while urgent infrastructural and social needs remain unaddressed.
