A traditional ruler has been kidnapped along with his two sons and six others in Kebbi State, located in Nigeria’s northwest region.

On Saturday night, bandits invaded the Kanya district in the Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area, taking nine individuals, including the traditional leader, Mohammed Isa-Daya, and his sons.

This incident occurred just two days after President Bola Tinubu claimed improvements in Nigeria’s security under his administration.

During an event in Abuja, where he was represented by National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Tinubu highlighted the deterioration of security in the country from 2022 to 2023, during Muhammadu Buhari’s presidency. He asserted that Nigerians can now travel freely from the capital, Abuja, to any part of the country without fearing attacks.

Contrary to these assurances, bandits have reportedly executed several raids across the northwestern states of Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, and Katsina within 48 hours of the president’s remarks.

In the Kanya community, the attack resulted in one person being killed, alongside the abduction of the district head, his sons, and six others. Bakatsine, a journalist specializing in conflict and crisis reporting in the Northwest, shared details of the attack on his X account.

He wrote, “Last night, bandits struck Kanya in Danko/Wasagu LGA, Kebbi State, tragically killing one and abducting nine, including the community’s traditional ruler and his two sons. May the Almighty accept the martyrdom of the deceased and ensure the safe rescue of the abducted individuals, while also putting an end to this crisis in Nigeria.”

The Kebbi State Police Command spokesperson, SP Nafiu Abubakar, confirmed the incident to SaharaReporters, stating, “Yes, nine persons were abducted, including the traditional ruler. One individual was shot dead, and three others who sustained injuries are receiving treatment at the General Hospital in Riba.”
