From November 1, 2024, Air Peace will increase its one-way ticket price for flights between Lagos and Abuja to N200,000. This sharp increase is a reflection of the ongoing economic challenges that have significantly affected the aviation sector, forcing airlines to raise fares. This has prompted many Nigerians to switch to road travel, leaving the airline industry grappling with low demand.

Our checks on Monday revealed that Air Peace is charging the highest among local airlines, with N200,000 listed on its website for a one-way trip. Comparatively, Aero’s tickets range between N94,000 and N109,000, Arik Air’s fares fall between N104,405 and N139,292, while Ibom Air charges between N124,000 and N133,000 for similar routes.

These soaring ticket prices have left many travelers stranded at airports, unable to secure flights. The Lagos-Abuja route, one of the busiest in Nigeria, has been particularly impacted, as passengers struggle to find available seats.

An official from Air Peace, who requested anonymity, confirmed the fare increase. She attributed it to the worsening economic conditions in Nigeria. “If you break down the cost of a ticket, you’ll see that the aviation business is bleeding. Operating costs are spiraling out of control, and taxes are eating into our margins,” she explained. “Unfortunately, these taxes go to the government, leaving us with no other choice but to raise fares. It’s a harsh reality.”

Efforts to reach Air Peace’s Chief Operating Officer, Toyin Olajide, for comment were unsuccessful, as she did not respond to calls or messages.

A regular air traveler, Adeleke Aina, expressed his frustration over the continuous rise in airfare. He remarked, “I’ve been flying for years, but with these constant price hikes, blaming the economy, I’ll soon have no choice but to take road transport instead. The situation is unbearable. Fuel prices are outrageous, and the government seems indifferent. It’s a worrying trend for our country.”
