A Nigerian activist known as Abuja Flag Boy has started a solo protest dubbed ‘Hunger Dey’ in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
On Friday morning, the lone demonstrator was spotted near Wuse Market holding a placard that boldly stated, “Hunger Dey.”
This protest follows a series of national demonstrations, including the recent #FearlessInOctober protest which took place about three weeks ago, and the #EndBadGovernance protests in August, where many Nigerians took to the streets to voice their discontent over economic struggles and ineffective governance.
These protests, aimed at highlighting economic hardship, poor governance, and other critical social issues, were met with a strong response from law enforcement.
In multiple videos obtained by SaharaReporters, protesters can be seen fleeing after the police released tear gas to disperse the crowd.
In response to these events, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police command had stationed personnel and equipment strategically throughout Abuja in anticipation of the protests.
“The purpose of these deployments is to ensure that residents of the FCT enjoy a peaceful Independence Day celebration,” stated FCT police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh. “The deployment includes Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) teams, anti-riot equipment, visibility policing, and other measures,” she added.
