On September 10, 2024, Maiduguri faced severe flooding after the Alau Dam, located about 20 km from the city in Jere Local Government Area, breached early Tuesday morning. The dam’s overflow inundated riverine areas, affecting major roads, schools, hospitals, and other public facilities. This aerial view, captured by Chima Onwe for UNOCHA, shows the extensive water coverage in the city.
Governor Babagana Zulum attributed the flooding to the Alau Dam’s overflow, which was exacerbated by water released from dams in Cameroon. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has called the flooding unprecedented. NEMA spokesperson Ezekiel Manzo remarked, “It is an unprecedented incident,” highlighting that areas in the city that have been flood-free for years are now submerged.
Over a Million Displaced
The governor reported that more than one million people have been displaced due to the flood. Many residents have sought refuge in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps located in the western part of Maiduguri. Humanitarian efforts are underway as NEMA and other organizations work to rescue those still trapped and provide shelter for the evacuated.
Devastation at Sanda Kyarimi Zoo Park
The Sanda Kyarimi Zoo Park has also suffered significant damage. According to General Manager Ali Abatcha, approximately 80% of the zoo’s animals have died due to the flooding, and some have escaped into the city. Social media footage shows an ostrich wandering the streets, with reports of other animals, including snakes and crocodiles, also spotted in the floodwaters.
Jailbreak and Public Safety Concerns
In addition to the damage to the zoo, the flooding caused a major security breach at the Maiduguri Medium Security Custodial Centre in Abaganaran. Over 280 inmates escaped when the floodwaters weakened the prison’s structure. Authorities are concerned about the safety risks posed by the escapees, many of whom are considered dangerous. Umar Abubakar, the service spokesperson, confirmed that the federal government is actively working to evacuate the correctional facility.
