A tragic early morning accident on the Abuja-Kaduna expressway claimed the lives of 21 travelers on Thursday. The crash involved a trailer truck and a passenger Hummer bus, with the bus heading towards Kano and Batsari in Katsina State.
According to an official from the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) who took part in the rescue operation, three passengers survived the accident and were rushed to Umaru Musa Memorial Hospital in Sabon-Wuse for urgent medical care. Meanwhile, the bodies of the deceased victims were taken to the hospital’s morgue.
The accident reportedly occurred near a route diversion, which had forced vehicles traveling in both directions to share a single lane. It was gathered that the driver of the trailer fled the scene, abandoning his vehicle alongside another container truck, further obstructing the busy highway.
As of the time of reporting, the accident had caused significant traffic congestion on both sides of the expressway.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Tafa Division, S.P. Idris Ibrahim, confirmed the incident but stated that he was still in the process of compiling his report for submission to the state command.
Attempts to reach the spokesperson for the command, ASP Mansur Hassan, were unsuccessful as he did not respond to calls at the time of filing this report.
