The 8th edition of the National Youth Games was officially declared open by Nigeria’s Sports Minister, John Enoh, at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State. In his address during the opening ceremony, Enoh emphasized the vital role of grassroots sports development in fostering young talent and strengthening Nigeria’s standing in global sports.
The event brought together young athletes and officials from all over the country. Enoh highlighted how critical grassroots sports are in developing future champions and fostering unity across the nation. He reiterated that this event is key to identifying and nurturing young athletes who could become future stars.
“In today’s world, sports are essential for creating wealth, promoting peace, fostering national unity, and facilitating international diplomacy. This is why the current administration, led by His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR), is committed to transforming the sports sector for maximum performance in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda,” Enoh stated.
Reflecting on the lessons from the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the minister called for a renewed emphasis on grassroots sports development. He advocated for a structured approach that goes beyond identifying talent to ensuring a comprehensive nurturing process, from the grassroots level to elite competitions.
Enoh also praised Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, for his unwavering support of grassroots sports, especially during a time when hosting such a national event poses many challenges.
This year’s Games have drawn a record-breaking number of participants, with 4,585 athletes and 1,159 officials cleared to compete. Enoh expressed his appreciation to the governors of the participating states and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory for their continued support and sponsorship of their delegations.
The minister urged all athletes and officials to uphold the spirit of fair play, compete cleanly, and abide by the rules. “This edition of the National Youth Games presents a crucial opportunity to develop the next generation of Olympic and Paralympic champions and set new world records,” Enoh added.
