On May 2, 2024, the Abuja Airport buzzed with energy as supporters of Omoyele Sowore rallied to demand change, chanting “Revolution Now.” This vibrant display of support coincided with a court hearing that could not proceed due to the police’s failure to serve a hearing notice to the SaharaReporters Media Group, the third defendant in the case.
The scheduled arraignment before Justice Nwite was delayed amidst legal disputes stemming from this oversight. Sowore’s attorney, Tope Temokun, strongly opposed the court’s intention to continue without the necessary notification served to the media group.
Temokun expressed frustration, questioning the fairness of the situation: “Why are we being treated this way? I established a company, and it operates independently of me,” he stated. He urged the judge to uphold justice, emphasizing that the police must follow proper procedures to allow for a fair trial.
The attorney highlighted the challenges Sowore faced, mentioning that the Department of State Services had confiscated his phones, hindering his ability to provide essential documentation. Sowore, who traveled back at significant personal expense, reiterated his commitment to the court, refuting claims of evading service.
Outside the courtroom, Temokun voiced his concerns about the police’s approach, insisting they could not shirk their responsibilities and expect to proceed without following due process. After considerable debate, the court ruled that SaharaReporters must be properly served with a hearing notice before future proceedings.
Sowore criticized the motives behind the legal action against him, describing it as “laughable” that billionaire Ned Nwoko complained about insults from his platform, claiming he was being stalked.
The atmosphere surrounding Sowore’s return to Abuja reflects a broader sentiment among his supporters, eager for political change.
