Human rights activist and leader of the #RevolutionNow Movement, Omoyele Sowore, has reiterated plans for the second phase of nationwide protests against hunger, poverty, and poor governance under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. This initiative, dubbed #FearlessInOctober, aims to unite Nigerians across all age groups, not just Generation Z.

Sowore, who previously ran for president with the African Action Congress (AAC), emphasized that the movement is driven by individuals of all ages who are frustrated with Nigeria’s governance. He noted that this effort extends beyond Nigeria, promoting a vision of “A New Pan-Africanism.” According to him, unity among Africans is crucial for achieving global prosperity, and Nigerians are called to action on October 1, coinciding with the country’s Independence Day.

“Don’t label it a Generation Z protest; it encompasses everyone, from A to Z,” Sowore stated. “This movement is fueled by all Nigerians who are tired of bad governance. If Africans come together, they can secure a place in global prosperity.”

He chose October for these protests due to its significance for several reasons. “It marks the anniversary of our independence, which we have yet to fully realize, as well as the anniversary of #EndSARS, a movement against police brutality, particularly the Special Anti-Robbery Squad’s actions during the October 20, 2020, protests.”

Sowore recalled the violent crackdown during the protests, which resulted in military force being used against participants. A local inquiry reported at least 48 victims, primarily young people advocating for change.

The initial phase of protests occurred nationwide from August 1 to 10, leading to multiple arrests by authorities targeting demonstrators. Some protesters have faced serious charges, including treason.

Despite this, Sowore continues to encourage Nigerians, especially the youth, to resist government repression and not succumb to attempts to silence them or maintain their oppression.
