The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has taken legal action against President Bola Tinubu’s government, challenging the recent hike in fuel prices. In a statement released on Sunday, SERAP’s Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, disclosed that the lawsuit focuses on the administration’s failure to investigate claims of corruption and mismanagement within the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

The lawsuit, filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja and marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1361/2024, names the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, alongside NNPCL, as respondents.

SERAP is seeking a court order to compel President Tinubu to direct the NNPCL to reverse the recent increase in petrol prices, which surged from N600 to N845 per litre. The group argues that this increase is “unjust, illegal, unconstitutional, and unreasonable.”

In addition, SERAP is requesting the court to order President Tinubu to instruct Mr. Fagbemi and relevant anti-corruption agencies to investigate allegations of corruption and mismanagement within NNPCL. The group further demands the prosecution of any individuals found culpable in the alleged misconduct.

According to SERAP, the fuel price hike is worsening the already dire economic conditions in Nigeria, plunging more citizens into poverty. They insist that holding NNPCL accountable for its actions would be in the public’s best interest.
