The Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Abuja has issued a strong condemnation of the recent terrorist attack in Yobe State, Nigeria.

According to Dungus Abdulkarim, the Yobe State Police Public Relations Officer, the attack took place in Mafa village, located in Tarmuwa Local Government Area. The assailants, believed to be Boko Haram insurgents, looted and set fire to shops and homes in the village. Tragically, the attackers also killed an unspecified number of residents and left behind fliers with Arabic inscriptions.

A letter found at the scene reportedly detailed the attackers’ motivations, claiming that the village had connections to the military.

Reports from SaharaReporters indicate that the attack in Mafa village, which occurred on Monday, resulted in the deaths of numerous residents. Sources within the community told SaharaReporters on Tuesday morning that many bodies had been recovered and taken to hospitals, while the search for remaining victims was still ongoing.

The Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) later claimed responsibility for the massacre, stating that it was carried out as “revenge for alleged grievances.” ISWAP released a letter written in Arabic, in which they asserted that the village was targeted for allegedly providing information to the military, which had led to the deaths of ISWAP members.

In response to the attack, the Saudi Arabian embassy issued a statement on X (formerly Twitter), condemning the incident as “treacherous.” The embassy emphasized the Kingdom’s firm stance against violence and terrorism, and extended its heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the Nigerian government and its people.

The statement from the embassy read, ā€œThe Embassy expresses the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s condemnation and denunciation of the treacherous terrorist attack that took place in Yobe State, northeastern Nigeria, which resulted in a number of deaths and injuries.

ā€œThe Embassy reiterates the Kingdom’s complete rejection of violence, terrorism, and extremism. The Kingdom also expresses its sincere condolences and sympathy to the families of the deceased and the government and people of Nigeria.ā€
