The Kano State Police Command has recovered 126 stolen mobile phones and arrested 26 individuals suspected of involvement in phone theft. According to Haruna Kiyawa, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, these recoveries and arrests were made during a series of operations conducted between September 1 and 12. The operations aimed to tackle the growing issue of mobile phone snatching in certain parts of the state.
Kiyawa explained that the operations were initiated following instructions from the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, who had directed all police commands and units to enhance their presence in public spaces to combat crime.
To address these challenges, Kano’s Commissioner of Police, Salman Dogo Garba, held a strategic meeting with the Command’s tactical units. He emphasized the need to target and eliminate criminal activities, including thuggery, armed robbery, and phone snatching.
“As a result of these focused efforts, 26 suspects involved in phone thefts and robberies were apprehended, and 126 stolen mobile phones were recovered,” Kiyawa stated.
In addition to the stolen phones, the police also seized various illegal items from the suspects, including 21 port-wine injections, 20 sachets of diazepam tablets, 600 exol tablets, three parcels of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, two cutlasses, two scissors, one long sword, and two laptops.
Kiyawa further mentioned that steps are being taken to ensure that the recovered phones are returned to their rightful owners after proper identification and verification. He assured that the suspects will face legal action and be prosecuted upon the conclusion of investigations.
