A man accused of kidnapping two children in Plateau State and extorting a ransom of N1.5 million has pleaded with authorities for leniency. The suspect, Umar Adam, abducted a boy and a girl and initially demanded N20 million from their family but eventually settled for N1.5 million to release the children.
The kidnapping took place in the NEPA community within Jos North Local Government Area, where Adam was later apprehended by local residents. His arrest occurred last month after he had collected the ransom and was on his way to release the children.
While being paraded alongside other suspects by the state police on Friday, September 6, Adam confessed to the crime, claiming it was his first time. “I kidnapped two teenagers and kept them in an unfinished building. After collecting N1.5 million as ransom, I was about to release them to their relatives when I was caught by locals,” he said.
Adam, pleading for mercy, added, “This is the first time I’ve committed such a crime. I beg the government to forgive me. It was a mistake, and I promise never to do it again.”
