Irete autonomous community in Owerri West local council area, Imo State, is in a state of fear following a violent attack by armed hoodlums. As of the latest update, Miss Ugochi Agbanyi has tragically died from injuries sustained during the assault, while her brother remains in critical condition at the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Owerri (FUTHO).
A local villager, who requested anonymity, provided a detailed account of the incident to Sunday Vanguard. According to the villager, the community has been struggling with frequent attacks by armed herdsmen. The situation escalated on the night of September 11, 2024, when local security forces engaged in a fierce gunfight with the armed assailants, who were attacking, robbing, and looting properties.
The confrontation forced the attackers to flee into the bushes along the northern part of the community, using the nearby Nworie River as their escape route. During their retreat, the hoodlums attacked anyone and anything in their path.
Among the victims were Uche Agbanyi, known locally as Uche Chelsea due to his passion for football, and his sister, Ugochi Agbanyi. The siblings, originally from Orlu, were initially taken to a nearby medical facility. However, due to the severity of their injuries, they were later transferred to FUTHO for more comprehensive treatment. Unfortunately, Ugochi Agbanyi succumbed to her injuries, while Uche’s condition remains critical.
The villager continued, noting that on the night of the attack, the hoodlums also stole a motorcycle near AA Rano filling station and Disney Hotel, inflicting serious injuries on the owner.
The attacks have significantly heightened security concerns in a community previously known for its tranquility. Residents are now unable to visit their farms and live in constant fear in their own homes. The villager has called on the Imo State Government and security agencies to intervene and prevent further violence.
Attempts to reach the State Police Command’s spokesperson, Mr. Henry Okoye, for a response were unsuccessful before press time.
