The Ogun State government has ordered the closure of five companies for violating environmental regulations. This was disclosed in a statement released on Sunday by the Chairman of the Ogun State Taskforce on Environmental Compliance and Enforcement, Farook Akintunde, who also serves as the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Dapo Abiodun on the Environment.
The affected companies include Nixim Paper Limited and Long Xiang Aluminum, both located along the Sagamu axis of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Also shut down were New Shidai Manufacturing Limited in Mowe, Obafemi Owode Local Government Area, and two unregistered companies operating illegally in the Ogere area of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
Akintunde explained that these companies were closed after receiving multiple petitions from local communities about the companies’ continuous discharge of untreated wastewater into the environment. He added that the state’s Environmental Protection Agency had issued them a Stop Work Order to halt production and rectify the situation.
“Instead of complying with the order, they continued to pollute their surrounding communities by discharging harmful untreated wastewater,” Akintunde noted. “The government had no choice but to shut them down in the public interest. It was also discovered that none of these companies had Effluent Treatment Plants (ETP), which are mandatory to prevent the discharge of harmful waste.”
Dr. Oluwadare Kehinde, Special Adviser to the Governor on the State Environmental Protection Agency, supported the decision, stressing the importance of wastewater management in preventing water pollution. He emphasized that the state will continue to enforce strict environmental standards, as outlined in the Ogun State Green Book, which governs environmental practices.
“For the two unregistered companies that were sealed, they must complete proper registration with the state government and meet other operational requirements before being allowed to resume operations,” Kehinde concluded.
