The Nigerian Air Force (NAF), through the air component of Operation Whirl Punch, has neutralized several terrorists following a recent attack on security personnel in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.
Reports indicate that over 100 terrorists engaged operatives from different security agencies in a fierce battle. The operatives called for air support to counter the heavily armed terrorists.
In a statement on Thursday, Group Captain Kabiru Ali, Deputy Director of Public Relations and Information for the Nigerian Air Force, confirmed the airstrikes. He revealed that the operation was carried out on Wednesday and, so far, 28 bodies of the terrorists have been recovered. Ali added that the security forces were still clearing weapons, more bodies, and motorcycles destroyed during the raid.
He explained, “In response to the criminal activities terrorizing Shiroro, the Air Component of Operation Whirl Punch executed a highly effective air mission on 11 September 2024. The mission was prompted by a request for air support after our forces encountered terrorists in Bassa. Upon reaching the area, NAF air assets observed over 100 terrorists battling our troops. After confirming the location of friendly forces, precision airstrikes were launched against the terrorists. The strikes successfully neutralized dozens of them. So far, 28 bodies have been retrieved, and the clearing of additional terrorists, weapons, and motorcycles is still ongoing.”
Ali emphasized that the operation showcases the NAF’s unwavering support for other security agencies in the ongoing battle against crime across Nigeria. He assured Nigerians that the military will continue collaborating with other forces to maintain national security.
“The success of this mission highlights the Air Force’s dedication to protecting Nigeria and supporting our sister services in the fight against banditry, terrorism, and other forms of criminality. We will keep conducting air operations, both independently and alongside ground forces, to eliminate threats and ensure the peace, prosperity, and security of our great nation,” Ali added.
Shiroro Local Government in Niger State has been notorious for banditry and terrorist activity. After several attacks on military personnel, the Nigerian military had previously withdrawn its forces from the area.
